In college I took a couple linguistics courses and we talked about how world events could sometimes change our language. For example, you can say 'Pearl Harbor' and people (usually) know exactly what you mean -- you're not talking about the place, you're talking about the event.
Or say 'September Eleventh' and people know what you mean. Can't believe it's been 4 years.
It's weird, but this is also our dating anniversary. What a bittersweet day that was for us.
